Job Title: ALM Dealer

Company Name: Standard Chartered Bank

What do you do in your job?

Manage the interest rate risk of the UK Private Banking Division of Standard Chartered Bank. Help to raise deposits, decide whether to hold the deposit (run the interest rate risk) or close the position in the market. Speak to clients and advise on the interest rate scenario for the currency.

How did you hear about the job and what did the application process involve?

I did the Mountbatten Internship Programme after university, spending a year in New York working for American Express. I returned to the UK in 2005 and went onto work for the Treasury Department of American Express Bank and worked my way up. American Express Bank was bought by Standard Chartered in 2008.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The variety, no 2 days are the same, there's always something new to learn, a new issue to be resolved, a new project to work on. Financial Markets are fascinating at the moment and I get to use both my market specific knowledge as well as my soft skills, building relationships with clients and colleagues, presenting ideas and selling to customers.

What is the most challenging aspect to your job?

Making a profit during volatile market conditions. We have to think creatively on behalf of our clients, what financial market products can we use to make a profit for our client and ourselves? Is the client willing to take risk? How can we minimise costs? We are always trying to better everything that we do.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Ideally heading up European Asset Liability Management for Private Banking, looking after UK, Geneva, and Monaco branches.
